Students are expected to choose one (1) grade and read through the Ontario Elementary Science
Curriculum 2007 and the 2022 version grade expectations (and any other helpful parts). What are the
main differences? What do the changes mean pedagogically, politically, for schools, for science
education? You will then take a stance. Do you prefer the 2007 or 2022 version? Why?
Using support from learning theories in science education (Required readings week 1-6), you will
create a Public Service Announcement video (3 min) or brochure (3 pages), you will make an
argument for why the older or current Ontario Science Curriculum is superior. Some curriculum topics
you might touch upon:
– E.g., STEM vs. STSE
– Coding
– Makerspaces
– Nature of science
– Inquiry learning
– Virtual simulation vs. hands-on experience
– Informal vs. formal learning
Task Requirements:
– Easy to view/read, organized, aesthetically pleasing
– Include visuals
– Support from course literature/learning theories
– Include example of age-appropriate science activity that draws from Ontario Science Curriculum
expectations and is supported by learning theories
