For your final paper assignment, you will either: A), apply our course material and discussions on illness narratives toward a contribution suited for an academic audience in a chosen field, or B), create a public-facing work confronting a contemporary issue in medicine and how it intersects with personal narrative. This could take the form of an original journalistic report, an interview with a researcher translating their work to a public-facing form, a podcast, autobiographical narrative writing, etc.
Please remember to number your responses!
1. First, decide if you would like to work on project type A or B. (Don’t worry — you can change your mind later!).
If A, what field? Why? What do scholars in this field publish and read? A peer-reviewed paper? A literature review?
If B, what kind of public-facing work would you like to compose? Why? A personal essay? An informative report? A podcast interviewing an expert in a specific field? An oral history?
2. What conventions of your chosen genre can you recognize? (Review AGWR + lecture if unsure).
3. Paste three URLs to pieces of a similar subject matter in your genre. (As per the lecture video, think of these as your style models. What kind of titles do your style models have? What context does the title provide? Why might you, as the reader/audience, click on it?
4. What kind of cultural context does your chosen genre generally explain? What do they assume their reader already knows?
5. Why do you think these will make good style models? What might you like to adapt from each of these models to your own project?
*attachments are class reading materials and my midterm paper. consider them.
